Huskies play hard, but fall short
Shellbrook’s Brooklyn Anderson had a big night in her home province, scoring three times as the Calgary Dinos beat the Huskies 3-1 in Canada West women’s hockey on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. Anderson, who is in her fourth year of eligibility, opened the scoring at the 14:54 mark of the first period on a hard wrist shot. Saskatchewan responded when first-year Huskie Kaylee Hill, followed up on a rebound to tie the game with 1:25 remaining in the opening frame.
The Huskies generated chances in the middle frame, however, late in the period, a bad line change would prove costly. Kyla Mitenko set up Anderson for her second of the game with 3:06 left go to in the period. “We had a terrible change”, said head coach Steve Kook. “It turns into a 3-on-1 with the wrong people.”
The Huskies put on sustained pressure in a 13 shot third period and came close to tying the game in a 6 on 4 skater situation. With goaltender Colby Wilson on the bench and Calgary’s Kate Wagner in in the penalty box in the final two minutes the Huskies could just not put one past Calgary goaltender Amelia Awad who made 24 saves for the win. Anderson, who started her USports career at Trinity Western, put her third goal of the night into the empty net with 28 seconds remaining. Veteran Huskie goaltender, Colby Wilson, stopped 22 Calgary shots. Both teams were 0 for 3 on the power play.
Despite the loss, Kook was much happier with his team’s effort compared to Friday’s 4-1 loss to the Dinos. “I liked our game”, he said. “Last night we didn’t battle. Tonight, I thought we did that well. Our forecheck was bang on. We cycled pucks, created chances, and worked hard. Last night we played tentative against them, tonight we didn’t.”
