“It was our best game of the year” – Huskie head coach, Steve Kook
It wasn’t the result the Huskies felt they deserved, however there was great satisfaction with the effort in Friday’s 2-1 loss to the Alberta Pandas at Merlis Belsher Place. “It was our best game of the year in all regards”, head coach Steve Kook said. “The thing that was the best was that we won puck battles.”
The Huskies opened the scoring on the power play at 5:18 of the first period when Brownyn Boucher tipped in a point shot from Kendra Zuchotzki. Boucher, a 4th-year winger with the U of S, spent lots of time near the Panda crease throughout the game. “She’s one of the players in our league that isn’t afraid to stand in front of the net”, said Kook.
The Pandas responded with a power play goal of their own when one of the team’s leadings scorers from last season, Madison Willan, tied the game with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period. Then with 1:16 left in the first period, Ryann Perrett scored what proved to be the game winning goal.
Saskatchewan outshot Alberta 12-7 in a second period that included four power play chances. The Huskies started the second period with a player advantage that was a carryover from a first period penalty, then started the third period a skater up after the visitors were assessed a four-minute kneeing call late in the middle frame.
