Huskies visit the Mount Royal Cougars in first two-game road trip of the season
After opening the season in Regina, then playing five straight games at home, the Huskie women’s hockey team ventures out for the first road trip of the season with October 25th and 26th games in Calgary against the Mount Royal Cougars. Saskatchewan is still chasing its first regulation win of the season after a pair of one goal losses to Alberta during the October the October 18-19 weekend. The U of S did pick up its second point of the season in a 4-3 Saturday shootout loss. “That’s going to be important going forward”, said head coach Steve Kook. Points every weekend…it doesn’t matter how we get them.”
The Huskies played well in Friday’s 2-1 loss to Alberta. Kook said it was his team’s best game of the season. The next night the Huskies lost several puck battles in the first two periods but rallied in the final frame for the regulation point. “The team knows we are improving every single time we hit the ice.”
The Cougars are 5 and 1 and are led by 4th-year forward, Aliya Jomha. who has seven points. 5th-year goaltender, Kaitlyn Ross, has allowed just four goals in four starts this season. “They are very structured”, said Kook. “They play on Olympic sized ice, and they know how to play on that big ice. They can score. If we turn the puck over, they can put the puck in the net, right away.”
The October 25th game starts at 7:00 PM. Puck drop on October 26th is at 5:00 PM. (Saskatchewan time) Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
