Huskies win fourth straight game, and first on the road, on the last day of the regular season

After a 1 and 3 start, the Huskie football team put the finishing touches on a 5 and 3 regular season with a 16-11 win over the Calgary Dinos at McMahon Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Scott Flory shared some concerns but is also encouraged about his team’s resilience. Calgary took an 8-1 lead when Ben Britton hauled in a 19-yard touchdown pass from Dom Britton in the first quarter. Saskatchewan responded when quarterback Anton Amundrud connected with Daniel Wiebe on a 46-yard pass and run play with 7:24 left to go in the first half. The Huskies were clinging to a 9-8 lead at the break.

While the game was close, it was not crisp according to Flory. “On offense we had guys open, and we didn’t quite make the play. That’s the stuff we have to clean up.” Discipline was also an issue at times according to the head coach. “The penalties…we had eight in the first half! To me that’s a focus thing. It’s taking away opportunities.” The Huskies were flagged 9 times in the football game for 74 yards.

After a scoreless third quarter, Dino kicker Vince Triumbari connected on a 33-yard field goal to give the home side an 11-9 lead early in the fourth. Saskatchewan’s defense turned Calgary away late in the final quarter when Saskatchewan linebacker Lane Novack made a big interception at the Huskie 10-yard line.

The Dinos had another fourth-quarter chance to take a five-point advantage with time winding down, but Triumbari missed a 42-yard field goal that Huskie returner Rhett Vavra ran out to the Calgary 45-yard line. After the 80-yard return, Saskatchewan turned to feature back Ryker Frank who carried the ball four straight times, ending the drive with a four-yard touchdown with seven seconds remaining. Frank finished with 147 yards on the ground. Amundrud had 273 passing yards. Wiebe made five catches for 87 yards. Charlie Parks contributed defensively, registering Saskatchewan’s fourth sack of the season.

The Huskies now face the UBC Thunderbirds in a Canada West semi-final on Saturday, November 2nd in Vancouver at 2:00 PM, Saskatchewan time. Like the Huskies, the T-Birds finished the regular season with a 5 and 3 record after falling to Manitoba, 51-38 on Saturday.

UBC defeated Saskatchewan 38-24 on September 20th at Thunderbird Stadium in the only 2024 regular season meeting between the teams. “We can raise our level of focus and detail”, Flory said. “We’ve done that. We should have great confidence.” The Thunderbird-Huskie semi-final can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app starting at 1:45 PM.

The Regina Rams visit the Manitoba Bisons in the other Canada West semi-final. Manitoba topped the regular season standings at 7 and 1, while the Rams were 3 and 5 in the regular season. Regina secured the post season position with Friday’s 29-22 win over the Alberta Golden Bears.
