Huskies basketball teams split weekend openers

Nov 15, 2024 | 11:30 PM

The opening night of a second consecutive homestand for the Saskatchewan Huskies basketball teams served up a mixed bag of emotions.

On the women’s side, head coach Lisa Thomaidis returned to the sideline after being absent last week due to national team coaching obligations in Germany. The Huskies picked up right where they left off after sweeping the Manitoba Bisons last weekend, cruising to a 75-50 win over the Alberta Pandas on Friday at the Physical Activities Complex.

Logan Reider was the focal catalyst in the Huskies’ attack, finished with a game-high 21 points including five three-pointers. Maya Flindall, one the key reserves off the bench, chipped in with 17 points. Courtney Primeau finished one point shy of a double-double, accounting for 9 points and 10 rebounds including six offensive boards.

While Saskatchewan committed an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers, they were able to force 23 on the other end of the court, to which they punished the visitors for 24 points.

One of the biggest adjustments the Pandas will face going into Saturday’s rematch is limiting the extra opportunities for the reigning Canada West champions, who scored 26 second chance points in Friday’s game.

No Alberta player was able to achieve a double-digit scoring mark, as Reece Hall and Claire Signatovich tied for the team lead with 9 points apiece.

In the men’s game, CEBL veteran Isaac Simon had his way with the Huskies all evening, accounting for 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in a 73-58 win for Alberta. Simon, who hails from Regina, has spent the last two summers playing professional hoops with the Saskatchewan Rattlers.

The Golden Bears, who did not trail at any point, started and finished the game strong, winning the first and fourth quarters by a combined 17 points.

Outside of Simon, forward Nate Waldron and guard Kyle Varner had 10 points apiece.

For head coach Jamie Campbell’s team, the usual sparks in the Huskies offence was held in check. Sophomore Easton Thimm finished the night with 10 points and 6 rebounds, while Emmanual Bonsu had more fouls than points (6 to 5).

Freshman Owen Murphy Wiebe came off the bench to add 10 points, while fellow first-year Dillyn Morin provided 8 points.

The Huskies shot the ball relatively well, going 40% from three-point range and from the field overall. But turnovers, a thorn in the team’s side last season, reared their ugly head once again. The Huskies allowed 20 Alberta points off 25 turnovers, while capitalizing for just five points off of 16 Golden Bears turnovers.

Both sides will renew acquaintances in less than 24 hours, as the women’s game will tip off at 5 p.m. and the men’s at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the PAC.
