A Ross shutout and a Loschiavo hat trick make the difference

There was a shut-out, a hat-trick and a pair of power play goals. The Huskies did it all in a 6-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place. Head coach Brandin Cote admitted his team didn’t have its best start of the season, but the scoreboard didn’t back that point up. 5th-year forward Vince Loschiavo put the home side in front with two goals in the first six minutes of the hockey game. His fourth of the season came just 2:42 in to the opening period, followed by another at 5:43. Dawson Holt put the Huskies up by three a little over ten minutes later.

Saskatchewan outshot the Griffins 9-6 in the second period and widened their lead when 2nd-year Huskie, Keaton Sorenson, scored his second goal of the season. The Huskies then scored a pair of third power play goals as Liam Keeler scored at 10:05 before Loschiavo put the finishing touches on the hat-trick in the late stages of the game.

Roddy Ross made 19 stops for his fourth win of the season. The Meadow Lake product entered the game with a 2.61 goals-against average in six appearances. 4th-year Huskie Jordan Kooy has a sparkling 2.00 GAA. Kooy, from Bradford, Ontario, suffered what Cote described as an “inopportune mishap with a kitchen knife.” He should return early in the new year. “I think we have the two best goalies in the league”, said Loschiavo. “Chaddy (Ethan Chadwick) is a little bit younger but he is an awesome goalie. He’s going to be a huge part of this team now and in the future.”

The final shots on goal favoured the Huskies, 30-22. Saskatchewan converted on half of its power play chances while MacEwan was 0-for-5. The Huskies moved to 11 and 4 on the season and host the Griffins at 5:00 PM on Saturday night in the final game before the holiday break. The game can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app starting at 4:55 PM.
