U-Prairie Challenge continues as Huskies face Cougars in weekend series
The sprint to the end of the Canada West men’s hockey season starts on Friday for the Huskies as they face the Regina Cougars in a home and home and home series to begin the 2025 portion of their schedule. The Dogs visit the provincial capital on Friday and return home to Merlis Belsher Place for the second game of the series on Saturday night at 7:00 pm. The series also marks the continuation of the U-Prairie Challenge.
The 12 and 4 Huskies have two games in hand on the front running Alberta Golden Bears in the east division standings. Saskatchewan has 12 games left and 24 points while Alberta has 10 games remaining and 28 points. Head coach Brandin Cote says the strategy is simple, “Get as many points as we can.”
There are some statistical categories that highlight the Huskies’ success to date. Goaltender Jordan Kooy has the best Goals Against Average in the conference at 2.00, while Roddy Ross is at 2.08. Saskatchewan also has the best power play percentage in the conference at 32.3 % (21/65) and the second-best penalty kill at 87.0 %.
With the Bears on the radar, the U of S has a favourable schedule. Starting Saturday, the Huskies play five straight games at Merlis Belsher Place including a big series against the Bears on the January 24th-25th weekend.
