On Saturday night, the Huskie women’s basketball team extended its win streak to eight games and remained a perfect 6 and 0 at home by beating the Mount Royal Cougars, 80-55 at the U of S campus.

Once again, it was the perimeter defence that led to easy transition points, as the home side forced 29 turnovers, capitalizing for 25 points. Additionally, those active hands led to 20 fast break points.

Gage Grassick led all players on the court with 21 points, to go along with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals.

Tea Demong, a fellow fourth year product, was an efficient 7 of 11 from the field for 17 points, while Courtney Primeau followed up her fantastic Friday night performance with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals.

Maddy Hooper and Haley Lalor had 33 of the Cougars’ 55 points with the former chipping in 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 rebounds, while the latter had 15 points and 3 assists.

Meanwhile, Jamie Campbell and the men’s team will have to wait yet another week to find the win column.

Mount Royal, while only winning by 12 (85-73), took 21 more trips to the free throw line compared to the home side (29-8).

The men’s side continues to struggle with turnovers, committing 16 Saturday night leading to 19 MRU points.

Keivonte Watts had a game-high 18 points. He was 9 of 16 from the field and a perfect 8 of 8 from the line. (The Huskies had eight free throws in total.)

Dray Walburger was the only other player in double figures for the visitors, with 14 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.

Emmanuel Bonsu, who had 26 points in Friday’s night contest, had 16 points and 6 rebounds on Saturday. Easton Thimm continued his solid work, chipping in with a 10 point, 10 rebound effort.

Both the Huskie women’s and men’s teams will head to Winnipeg next weekend before returning home on January 24 and 25th to take on the University of Lethbridge.
