Huskie women’s team defeats Mount Royal, men’s team falls short
The Huskie women’s basketball team kept pace with the other Canada West Prairie division leaders at the Ron & Jane Graham Centre Court at the U of S campus on Friday night. Despite a slow start, Saskatchewan dominated Mount Royal 82-51 in the first game of two game series in Saskatoon.
Trailing 18-17 after the first 10 minutes, the home-side took control in the second quarter, jumping out to a 40-29 halftime lead. Prince Albert’s Gage Grassick had 10 of her 15 points in the second quarter. Saskatchewan forward Courtney Primeau led all scorers with 17 points. The Huskies poured in another 23 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
The Huskies and Alberta Pandas are tied for second place in the Canada West standings with 7 and 2 records. The Pandas cruised to an 81-49 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night. Division leading Regina, now 9 and 2, downed MacEwan 77-43.
Saskatchewan’s men’s team fell to 0 and 9 with an 82-69 loss to the Mount Royal Cougars. The visitors rallied with a 33-point fourth quarter for the win. Keivonte Watts had 24 points for MRU, while the U of S was led by Emmanuel Bonsu with 33 points.
