The Huskie men’s hockey team began a five-game home stand in style with a 7-2 victory over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday night. Saskatchewan shook off a slow start with a five-goal second period. “We looked like a team that got off the bus at 2:30 in the morning”, said head coach Brandin Cote. Following a 6-3 win in Regina on Friday night, the Huskies didn’t get back to Saskatoon until after 2:00 am on Saturday morning due to road conditions.

The Cougars outshot the home-side 9-6 in the first period and took a 1-0 lead on a Kolton Schindle goal. “We knew our first period wasn’t very good”, said Cote. “I liked our response.” Veterans Ty Prefontaine and Vince Loschiavo each scored a little over a minute apart early in the second period to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead. Loschiavo, a 5th-year Huskie from Winnipeg, then buried his 10th of the season at 7:19 to give the U of S a two-goal cushion.

With the score 3-2, Saskatchewan’s top ranked power play when to work. Rhett Rhinehart set up Carter Stebbings for his 6th goal of the season. The Huskie power play is operating at over 30% this season as the team has scored 25 power play goals in 18 games. A little over a minute later, 4th-year forward Chantz Petruic scored the first of two goals to make it a 5-2 game. Petruic and Cade Hayes put pucks past Regina starting goaltender Jackson Fellner in the third period.

Roddy Ross made 22 stops for his 6th win of the season. The effort was appreciated by his teammates, especially early in first period. “At the start of the game, I thought we were scrambling”, said Petruic. “Roddy held the fort down back there.”

The Huskies have a great deal of confidence in their goaltenders. Jordan Kooy made 19 saves in Friday night’s victory for his seventh win of the season. First-year Huskie, Ethan Chadwick, has a wealth of WHL experience as well. “Any guy we need to go to on any given night…I have full faith in”, said Petruic.

Saskatchewan keeps pace with front-running Alberta in the Canada West east division with the win. The Golden Bears downed Calgary 5-1 on Saturday night and sit with 32 points. The Huskies have 28 points and have two games in hand on the U of A.

The Manitoba Bisons visit the Huskies on January 17th at 7:00 PM and January 18th at 5:00 PM at Merlis Belsher Place. Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
