Huskie health top of mind going in to series with Manitoba
The focus is on the here and now. That’s the message from Huskie women’s hockey coach Steve Kook as the team prepares for January 17th and 18th games in Winnipeg against the Manitoba Bisons. Following a home-and-home split with the Regina Cougars on the January 10th-11th weekend the 3-11-1-3 Huskies are 12 points out of the final playoff spot with ten games remaining in the regular season.
Injuries have forced the Huskies into approaching the season one game at a time. “We are trying not to do too much math”, said Kook. “I think early on they (players) were counting numbers. It doesn’t make sense to do too much number crunching.”
The Huskies lost 4th-year winger Paris Oleksyn for the season with a clavicle injury in Friday’s 3-1 win over the Cougars. 2nd-year forward Kahlen Wiesener will miss this weekend’s series in Winnipeg due to injury. There is some good news on the horizon. 3rd year forward Taylor Wilkinson, who hasn’t played in two months, makes her way back into the lineup. 4th-year forward Sara Kendall is expected to play before the end of the month.
The Bisons are tied with Regina for second spot in the Canada West east division with 22 points. Manitoba swept Saskatchewan in a November 1st-2nd series at Merlis Belser Place. The January 17th contest starts at 7:00 PM. Puck drop for the January 18th game is at 5:00 PM. (Saskatchewan time) Both games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
