Huskies tame Bisons in series opener and secure playoff sot
Six and counting. The Huskie men’s hockey team extended its win streak to six games on Friday night with a 7-2 rout over the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place. The win secures the U of S a Canada West playoff spot. Second-year defender, Landon Kosior, kicked off a four-point game with his third of the season, 2:59 into the hockey game. Mac Gross helped the Huskies to a 2-0 lead at 13:59 of the first period.
After the Bisons cut the lead to 2-1 on a Caden Zaplitny marker, the Huskies went on a three-goal run. Chantz Petruic struck on the power play at 3:52 before Ashton Ferster and Vince Loschiavo followed up with markers of their own. Head coach Brandin Cote said there was lots of good in his team’s game, but in a one-sided contest, focus can sometimes drop. “When we got up, we let our foot off the gas and weren’t as refined as we’d like”, he said.
After a Ben Bonni goal in the third period, Saskatchewan ran away with the contest. Kosior and Carter Stebbings rounded out the scoring in the final frame. Kosior now has 22 points in 19 games. Huskie veteran goaltender, Roddy Ross, made 19 stops for his 7th-win of the season. “Roddy made some key saves when we needed them” Cote said. Manitoba rookie goalie, Braden Holt, allowed seven goals from 31 Huskie shots.
The Alberta Golden Bears blanked the Regina Cougars 4-0 in Edmonton on Saturday night, so the Huskies remain four points back of the east division leading Bears. Saskatchewan has two games in hand. The Bisons fall to 4-13-1-1 on the season.
