Huskie Win On Play For A Cure Night

Saskatchewan pulls out one goal win at home

Jan 31, 2025 | 11:25 PM

The veteran goaltender made the saves, and the leading scorer buried the lone goal. The Huskie women’s hockey team pulled out a 1-0 win over the MacEwan Griffins at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. The U of S rode a Brownyn Boucher first-period goal to the win against a Grant MacEwan team that was marginalized due to injuries. The Griffins had just 15 skaters for the game but battled hard.

Boucher’s 7th goal of the season came on a wrap around effort with just 44 seconds remaining in the first period. Warman product Mikayla Christmann was solid in the Griffin net stopping 24 of 25 shots in just her second U SPORTS start. Last Saturday she earned a shut-out in a 2-0 victory over Manitoba in her Canada West debut.

Saskatchewan goaltender Colby Wilson made 15 stops for the win. With a late third period power-play and Christmann out of the net, the Griffins attempted a 6 skater to 4 rally to get the equalizer however Wilson and the Huskies held the visitors at bay to preserve the win. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play. MacEwan fell to 3-17-2-1 with the loss.

It was the 17th annual ‘Play For A Cure’ game as the Huskies wore special black jerseys that were auctioned off with proceeds going to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.

While the Huskies still have a mathematical chance at a playoff spot, they were unable to gain any ground on their provincial rival. The Regina Cougars pulled out a 2-1 win over the Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg on Friday night. The Cougars maintained a nine-point lead on the Huskies for the final playoff spot in the east division. Both teams have just five regular season games remaining.

The second game of the Griffin-Huskie series is set for Saturday afternoon at 5:00 PM at Merlis Belsher Place and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
