The fight to stay in first
Staying on top. That’s the goal for the Huskie men’s hockey team this weekend in Vancouver. With two games in hand on the rival Golden Bears, both Saskatchewan and Alberta sit with 40 points apiece on top of the east division standings. (The Huskies have four games remaining, the Bears have two.)
The Thunderbirds are chasing Mount Royal for top spot in the west division. UBC has 35 points, one back of the Cougars…both teams have four games remaining in their regular season. (The top two teams in each division get first round bye in the playoffs.)
The U of S is riding an 11-game win streak following 3-1 and 5-4 overtime victories over the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton on the January 31st-February 1st weekend. Chase Bertholet scored the extra-time winner in the Saturday win. Saskatchewan’s special teams continue to be the best in the league at 34%. Three of the eight weekend goals scored were on the power-play. The Huskies also have the best penalty-kill at 89%.
Saskatchewan’s two veteran goaltenders, Roddy Ross and Jordan Kooy were both able to pick up wins against the Griffins. Ross, with a 9-3 record, has the conference’s only goals against average under 2.00, while Kooy, who got the win on Saturday, is 10-1 on the season.
