The final home game of the season
Three Huskie women’s hockey players suited up for the last time at Merlis Belsher Place on Saturday night as UBC blanked the home team 3-0. Defender Brooklyn Stevely and forwards Jasper Desmarais and Taylor Wilkinson were recognized prior to puck drop for their contributions to the program.
The final home game was bitter-sweet for Wilkinson who has eligibility left but completed her education and kinesiology degree. “It’s hard when it’s your last weekend but everyone pulled together”, she said. In a pre-game ceremony Stevely, Desmarais and Wilkinson were introduced with family members. Wilkinson’s parents, Sherry and Scott, along with her grandparents and brother Matthew were on hand for her final game. “My family has done everything for me”, she said. “It means the world to have them supporting me.”
When asked for her favourite memory as a Huskie, the Lloydminster product looked back to March of 2024 when the University of Saskatchewan hosted the U SPORTS women’s hockey championships. “That feeling of going out to that crowd. The roars. There is no better feeling then that.”
The leading scorer in Canada West hockey made her presence felt again on Saturday night. T-Birds forward Grace Elliot, who has a league leading 21 goals in 26 games this season, scored in the first and second periods to lift the visitors to a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Jaylyn Morris added a third period marker, while Mya Lucifora got the shutout as UBC outshot the Huskies 47-15. Colby Wilson made 44 saves in the Saskatchewan net.
