The Huskie women’s basketball team put the finishing touches on a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars on Saturday night, defeating the U of R 70-61 at the PAC. Saskatchewan rallied with 24 points in the second quarter and 20 more in the final quarter for the win.

4th-year guard Gage Grassick had seven of her 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Huskies overcame a four-point deficit going into the final ten minutes of play. Seven of Tea DeMong’s nine points also came in the final quarter. Guard Jade Belmore led the way for Regina with 25 points while Cara Miskey contributed with 23.

The Huskies, who defeated the Cougars 67-61 on Friday night in Regina, improve to 16-2 in the standings and share first place with the Alberta Pandas in the Canada West’s Prairie Division. The Cougars fall to 12-6.

The U of S men’s team won its fourth straight game over the Cougars, 69-64. Saskatchewan rode a huge 28-point third quarter to victory. Easton Thimm poured in nine of his 21 points in the third, while Freddy Kapinga had eight of his 15 just after half-time.

Regina did have a 16-point first half lead but could not hold off the home side in the final 30 minutes. Guard Ben Kamba set the pace for the U of R with 22 points while Jordan Persad had 20 off the bench.

Despite losing back-to-back games to the Huskies, Regina is clinging to the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division at 6-12. Saskatchewan improved to 5-13 to keep post-season hopes alive going into the last weekend of the regular season.

The U of S basketball teams visit the Brandon Bobcats on the February 14th-15th weekend.
