Huskies wrap up season with road trip to Manitoba

Feb 14, 2025 | 7:52 AM

The Huskie women’s hockey team wraps up its 2024-25 Canada West hockey season in Winnipeg on February 14th and 15th, with two games against the Manitoba Bisons. Saskatchewan will attempt to rebound following 9-0 and 3-0 home ice losses to the UBC Thunderbirds on February 7th and 8th. “They took advantage of our turnovers and mistakes”, said head coach Steve Kook.

Saskatchewan has a 5-15-4-2 record entering the last weekend of the regular season. With the graduation of Jasper Desmarais, Brooklyn Stevely and Taylor Wilkinson from the program, Kook is now looking ahead to the importance of his leadership group for next season.

Players such as Bronwyn Boucher, Sara Kendall and goaltender Colby Wilson will be expected to take on elevated roles next season according to Kook. “You have to spend a little more time with (the younger players) while at the same time, they want to play well and excel too It’s a big task for them.”

While it took some time, goaltender Wilson emerged as the team’s go to starter ahead of Emma Backman, while rookie Clara Juca adjusted to her first year of Canada West women’s hockey this season. “I think it ended up being a little bit more (for Wilson) then what she thought it might be”, said Kook. “It’s different when you have to carry the load. It was a good year for her to figure out ‘how does it feel when I’m in the zone and how do I stay there?’”

Kook was also asked what he’d like his team to be known for next season. “We have to work harder. We are still youngish. We have to be the hardest working ‘Dogs’ on the ice and not take things for granted. You have to make your building hard to play in. That’s what I envision.”

As far as wrapping up the regular season against the playoff-bound Bisons, Kook said “Manitoba is another one of those teams where you get five-minute sin to the game and you quickly don’t like them very much. I don’t think there will be any shortage of emotion. I think the compete will be there, I just hope we can play free and loose.”

Kook chatted with Huskie head coach Steve Kook on this week’s edition of The Coach’s Show.
