The Huskie women’s basketball team dominated the Trinity Western Spartans 83-57 in a Canada West quarter-final at the PAC on Saturday night. The Spartans, who defeated Mount Royal 67-62 in a play-in game on Friday in Saskatoon, jumped out to a strong start, taking an early 5-0 lead.

Fourth year forward Tea DeMong, who had six of her 14 points in the first quarter, began the comeback for the Huskies. After giving the home side a 6-5 lead, De Mong made a mid-court steal and helped Saskatchewan to an 8-5 advantage. Then, the Hinton, Alberta product connected on an impressive turnaround jumper to give Saskatchewan a three-point lead with 2:45 left in the quarter.

TWU fought to keep it close. Colette Van der Hoven scored on a lay-up with less than two minutes to go as the Spartans had a brief 13-12 advantage. However, the Huskies regained a sizeable lead late in the first quarter when Courtney Primeau scored, drew a foul, and completed a three-point play to help Saskatchewan 19-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.

The U of S took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 23-16 as DeMong had another six-point period. Saskatchewan’s bench was solid. Third year guard, Maya Flindall, had five points before half-time and nine of the Huskies’ 22 points from reserves. The Huskies took a 42-29 lead to the dressing room.

There was more Huskie dominance in the third quarter as the team went on an 8-0 run. Like DeMong, fourth year guard Andrea Dodig had 14 points, including 10 in the third quarter as the U of S led 70-43 after 30 minutes of play. Dodig also had a team leading 10 rebounds in the game.

In the final quarter, fourth year forward, Ella Murphy Wiebe, came off the bench for six of Saskatchewan’s 13 points in the final 10 minutes of the game. When asked about the strength of the team’s bench, Dodig said, “Day in, day out, we all put the work in, and we are all determined to go out there when your number is called. We all have full faith and trust in everyone coming in.”

DeMong, Dodig, Murphy Wiebe, Gage Grassick and Courtney Primeau all had double-digit games. Shemaiah Abatayo led the way for the Spartans with a game-high 20 points, while Cassidy Buchanan poured in 13.

The Huskies host the Fraser Valley Cascades in the Canada West semi-finals on Saturday, March 1st at the PAC. (The Cascades defeated the Calgary Dinos 62-59 in another Canada West quarter-final on Saturday.)
