Dodig and DeMong lead Huskies to victory over Spartans
The Huskie women’s basketball team dominated the Trinity Western Spartans 83-57 in a Canada West quarter-final at the PAC on Saturday night. The Spartans, who defeated Mount Royal 67-62 in a play-in game on Friday in Saskatoon, jumped out to a strong start, taking an early 5-0 lead.
Fourth year forward Tea DeMong, who had six of her 14 points in the first quarter, began the comeback for the Huskies. After giving the home side a 6-5 lead, De Mong made a mid-court steal and helped Saskatchewan to an 8-5 advantage. Then, the Hinton, Alberta product connected on an impressive turnaround jumper to give Saskatchewan a three-point lead with 2:45 left in the quarter.
TWU fought to keep it close. Colette Van der Hoven scored on a lay-up with less than two minutes to go as the Spartans had a brief 13-12 advantage. However, the Huskies regained a sizeable lead late in the first quarter when Courtney Primeau scored, drew a foul, and completed a three-point play to help Saskatchewan 19-13 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The U of S took control in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 23-16 as DeMong had another six-point period. Saskatchewan’s bench was solid. Third year guard, Maya Flindall, had five points before half-time and nine of the Huskies’ 22 points from reserves. The Huskies took a 42-29 lead to the dressing room.
