The Huskie women’s basketball team hosts the Fraser Valley Cascades at the PAC on Saturday night in a Canada West women’s basketball semi-final. The Huskies defeated the Trinity Western Spartans 83-57 last weekend in the conference quarter final. Saskatchewan fell behind 5-0 before rallying with a 23-point fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Andrea Dodig and Tea DeMong had 14 points each while the team received great support off the bench. Ella Murphy Wiebe had 10 points, while Maya Flindall was good for nine. “It is great that we have a number of different weapons that, on any given night, can go off for 10, 15 or 20 points.”

The Cascades defeated the Calgary Dinos 62-59 to advance to Saturday’s match-up at the U of S campus. One of UFV’s leaders is fifth-year guard, Maddy Gobeil, who averaged 16.6 points per game in the regular season. “She can shoot the three, she’s aggressive, and she’s a good defender”, said Thomaidis. Gobeil and Julia Tuchscherer had 16 points apiece in the win over the U of C last weekend. “They are two really strong athletes that we will have to care of and do it by committee”, said Thomaidis.

The two teams are familiar with each other after meeting in the 2024 semi-finals, where the Huskies defeated the Cascades 84-50. Thomaidis says Fraser Valley’s roster is experienced and post players are solid. “This is kind of their time”, she said. “They’re very disciplined and they are great passers. They’ll throw some different things at you defensively, so there is lots to prepare for.”
