Canada West titles on the line at the PAC and Merlis Belsher Place this weekend

The Canada West’s best meet in the conference’s men’s hockey final at Merlis Belsher Place on the March 7-8-9 weekend. The Mount Royal Cougars finished with the best record in the west division (44 points) before defeating the Alberta Golden Bears, two games to one, in the conference semifinals last weekend. Cougar defender Clay Hanus led the conference in regular season scoring with 43 points in 21 games.

After falling behind 1-0 in their semifinal with UBC, the Huskies rallied with a 3-2 win in game two and a 4-2 victory in the deciding game to advance to the league final. Saskatchewan’s power play, which was number one in the conference during the regular season, ran at over 28% in the second and third game of the series. (4-for14)

The schedule for the Canada West Championship is:

Game # 1 – Friday, March 7 – 7:00 PM

Game #2 – Saturday, March 8 – 7:00 PM

Game #3 – Sunday, March 9 – 6:00 PM (If necessary)

The Huskie women’s basketball team hosts the UBC Thunderbirds in a one game showdown for the 2025 Canada West championship. U of S head coach Lisa Thomaidis, who on Thursday was named Canada West coach of the year, led her team to a 18-2 regular season record and playoff wins over Trinity Western and Fraser Valley.

After finishing the regular season with an 18-2 regular season record, the Thunderbirds defeated Regina in the conference quarterfinals and Alberta in the semifinals to advance to Saturday’s one game final. Tip-off for the championship game is at 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 8th at the PAC and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
