No need to panic
Some heavy lifting was required on Friday night. The Huskie men’s hockey team dug out, from 3-0 down, to double up the Mount Royal Cougars 6-3 in the first game of the Canada West championship at Merlis Belsher Place. Kyle Walker took advantage of an early turnover to lift MRU to a 1-0 lead 11 seconds into the game. The Cougars went up by a pair when Josh Tarzwell scored his fourth of the playoffs, then Justin Lies scored to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage eight minutes later.
Despite the deficit, the Huskies appeared composed in the early stages of the second period. Huskie goaltender Roddy Ross turned aside 16 shots in the middle frame. The U of S then gave the standing room only crowd something to get loud about when defender Landon Kosior scored his third of the playoffs at 14:43. The noise level increased, 36 seconds later, when Ethan Regnier scored to make it 3-2.
With over 2,500 supporters now fully engaged, the Huskies tied the game at 7:56 of the third when Carter Stebbings tipped a Parker Gavlas point shot past MRU goaltender Shane Farkas. Gavlas had a strong game for the U of S with three assists.
Saskatchewan’s depth again came to the forefront as the line of Chase Bertholet, Trevor Wong and Keaton Sorenson connected mid-way throught the final period. Bertholet scored his first of the playoffs at 10:59 to give Saskatchewan its first lead of the night. Veteran Vince Loschiavo added some insurance with just over five minutes left before Carter Stebbings put one into the empty net in the final minute.
