Not only was he representing the university he plays for, but Roddy Ross was also showing pride in his heritage on Wednesday. The 4th-year Huskie goaltender wore a brilliant bead, University of Saskatchewan Huskie, medallion to Wednesday’s U SPORTS men’s hockey championship awards in Ottawa. Roddy’s cousin, Brianna Ross from the Flying Dust First Nation near Meadow Lake, made it for him.

“I’ve wanted it done for the last couple of years”, he said “It’s something I wear with pride. I wanted to show off the tradition. Many indigenous people wear these medallions. It makes me feel proud to be from the university and be from my culture. She makes beautiful bead work”, he said.

Ross was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian on Wednesday morning. The Meadow Lake product turned in a Canada West best 1.99 Goals Against Average during the 2024-25 regular season. “I couldn’t have done this without my teammates and all the support back home”, he said. Ross and 4th-year goaltender Jordan Kooy, who went 12 and 1 this season, made a formidable goaltending tandem.

The Huskies are the second seed in the eight-team, 2025 University Cup. Saskatchewan’s first game is against the OUA bronze medallist, the Queen’s Golden Gaels, on Friday evening. Ross and his teammates are focused on the task at hand. “I’m ready to put this (Second Team All-Canadian) award away and get dialed in for the tournament”, he said. “I’ve got a really good feeling about this group. In the end, I want the big one.”

The 2025 University Cup starts on Thursday afternoon as Mount Royal faces Toronto Metropolitan in the afternoon. The evening quarterfinal features the University of New Brunswick Reds against the host Ottawa Gee Gees. The winners will meet in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal.

On Friday Moncton takes on Concordia in the afternoon, before the evening Queen’s-Huskie contest. All Huskie games can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app beginning with Thursday’s quarterfinal…the Pre-Game Show starts at 4:45 PM.

The winners of Friday’s quarterfinals will meet in the Saturday evening semifinal at 4:45 PM. The bronze medal game is Sunday at 9:00 AM, while the gold medal matchup is set for Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. (All Saskatchewan time)
