A wild start to the 2025 University Cup

Huskies make final preparations for Queen’s

Mar 20, 2025 | 8:06 PM

On Thursday, the Huskies had a morning skate in Ottawa, then rested up for Friday’s University Cup contest against the Queen’s Golden Gaels. It was a loud, energetic session as the team prepares to play its first game since March 9th when they defeated the Mount Royal Cougars in game three of the Canada West championship series at Merlis Belsher Place.

Saskatchewan not only has two of the best goaltenders in the country in Roddy Ross and Jordan Kooy and a power play that operates at over 30% but the Huskies also have a very experienced defensive core. The talented Landon Kosior has been paired with 4th-year Huskie, Gunner Kinniburgh, while Ty Prefontaine and Parker Gavlas, both in their 4th-year of eligibility, are also a formidable duo on the back end. “We have a really old D-core”, said Prefontaine. “That will really help us with calming down the game and not gripping the sticks too tight. Keeping it calm and steady will be very beneficial.”

The (22-6) Golden Gaels averaged 3.57 goals per game in the 2024-25 OUA regular season and allowed the second fewest goals in the league. 4th-year forward Nolan Hutcheson was tied for second in the conference with 20 goals in 25 games. Despite not advancing to the OUA league final, Queen’s has talent that the Huskies will have to mindful of according to Prefontaine. “We’ve done a little bit of research on them. We know they have some guys who can put the puck in the net.”

U of S captain Justin Ball spoke with HuskieFAN following Thursday’s skate.

The 2025 University Cup got off to a memorable start on Thursday as Toronto Metropolitan Bold and the Mount Royal Cougars played in the longest game in Canadian University hockey history. TMU’s Spencer Shugrue scored at the 3:33 mark of the fifth overtime period (that’s 143 minutes and 33 seconds of hockey) as the Bold pulled out a wild 5-4 win in a game that lasted 6 hours and 33 minutes. Toronto Metropolitan advances to Saturday’s semi-finals, while the Cougars are eliminated from the tournament.
