Huskies overcome a pair of one goal deficits to defeat Queens
One of the best power plays in U SPORTS men’s hockey was effective again on Friday night at the University Cup in Ottawa. The U of S Huskie power play, which ran at over 30% during the Canada West season, was 2-for-4 in a 4-2 win over the Queen’s Golden Gaels in the last quarter-final of the tournament.
The Gaels jumped out to an early lead when Liam Tanner scored 1:42 into the hockey game. Led by the veterans, the Huskies stayed calm and tied the game on a Dawson Holt marker five and a half minutes later.
With the score 2-1, Holt, who had 36 points in 28 regular season games for the Huskies, buried his second goal of the game at 5:18 of the second period to tie the contest. Saskatchewan’s power play struck again later in the middle frame when captain Justin Ball tipped the puck past Queens goaltender Christian Purboo at 14:23 for what proved to be the game winner. Ethan Regnier potted an empty net goal in the third period.
4th year goaltender Roddy Ross made 38 saves for his third win of the post season. The Meadow Lake product turned aside 25 shots in the final two periods. Purboo made 20 saves on 23 shots. Liam Tanner and Nolan Hutcheson had the Queen’s goals.
