October 4th-Football Day in Saskatoon

May 29, 2025 | 3:48 PM

A special event like no other is planned for Saturday, October 4th on the USask campus. The first ever “Football Day in Saskatoon” will be a day long celebration of the sport culminating in an evening Canada West clash as the Saskatchewan Huskies host the Alberta Golden Bears at 7:00 PM at Griffiths Stadium at Nutrien Park.

More than 1,900 football players from the city will begin competition at 9:00 AM with many flag football games on the grass fields surrounding Griffiths Stadium. Kinsmen tackle games will be featured inside the stadium at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. The last of three rally alleys of the season will start at 12:00 PM on the grass fields to west of the stadium.

At 12:00 PM there is a Saskatoon high school contest as the E.D. Feehan Trojans square off against the Mount Royal Mustangs, followed by a 3:00 PM women’s flag football feature game. Half-time fireworks will highlight Saturday’s Bear-Huskie contest. “It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase various levels of football here in the great city of Saskatoon”, said Michael Jenkins, Associate Athletics Officer, Development and Marketing.

Football Day in Saskatoon will bring every level of football together for a one-day celebration, according to Jenkins. “Not only are we engaging all of those stakeholders but also the Saskatoon Hilltops, the Saskatoon Valkyries and the Saskatchewan Roughriders will be participants in Football Day in Saskatoon as well.”

The October 4th U of A-USask contest is the third of the Huskies’ four home games during the 2025 season. This year’s homecoming game is set for Friday, September 5th when the UBC Thunderbirds visit Saskatoon. Great Western will be the title sponsor of our annual homecoming game. “Two years ago the game set an attendance record and was sold out at well over 10,000”, said Jenkins. “We are really looking forward to engaging our alumni, our campus community and community to sell out the homecoming game.”

The 2025-26 U-Prairie Challenge, presented by SaskMilk, starts on Friday, September 19th when the Regina Rams visit the USask campus. The University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan will again have a season long challenge, involving many Canada West sports, that will culminate in the 2026 champion being declared in February. The Huskies’ final home football game will be played on Saturday, October 25th, when the Manitoba Bisons visit Saskatoon to wrap up the 2025 season.
