Mustangs’ Somers, Andrusiak commit to U of S Huskies

Two graduating players for the Melfort Mustangs are going to remain teammates, now at the collegiate level.

Zac Somers and Nic Andrusiak have committed to the University of Saskatchewan Huskie hockey program (U Sports).

“We are extremely proud of Zac’s commitment to the U of S Huskies Men’s Hockey Team. His dedication and hard work for our organization have been greatly appreciated for the past four seasons. He has overcome many obstacles and has persevered every time,” said Melfort Mustangs’ Head Coach Trevor Blevins.

“Nic was an important acquisition this past summer for our organization. He was an integral part of our Championship season, and his leadership and commitment this year were outstanding.”

Somers, a Melfort native, spent all four years of his Junior A career with his hometown Mustangs, including the last pair as an assistant captain.

In 204 combined contests between regular season, playoff, and Centennial Cup action, the five-foot-eleven, 154-pound forward put up 185 points. Now 21 years old, Somers is a two-time Canaterra Seeds Cup Champion and CJHL National Silver medalist.

As for Andrusiak, a native of Tisdale, he played just this past year with the Blue and Green, after 125 games in the Western Hockey League and 75 contests with the Melville Millionaires.

As a Stang in 2024/25, the 20-year-old blueliner was named the SJHL Defenceman of the Year, producing 42 points in 59 combined postseason, regular season, and national championship matches.

“I’m super excited about my commitment to the Huskies, it’s gonna be a fun time, they’re an unbelievable school, and their whole program is just top notch. It was a no-doubter once they wrote that offer,” Andrusiak told northeastNOW.

“I got a taste of playing close to home again this year, so I kind of wanted to stick with that for my next step as well. It’s nice for my family so they can come watch me, and I have a lot of friends in Saskatoon and the area as well, so it’ll be a nice bit of a home ice advantage for me.”

This will mark the third different team that Somers and Andrusiak will play on together, as the two were teammates on the U15AA North East Wolfpack, back in the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons.

The two will now even be living together in Saskatoon, with their business classes perfectly synced up, after sharing a school tour, with one of their guides being a former Mustang.

“That’ll make it easier for us to ease into the jump and going back to school, just having someone there where you can help each other out through the bumps and bruises… we took our tour together, hoping that we’d both like it and end up going there. We stayed in touch with where we were at in our decision making, and ultimately, both decided to commit,” added Andrusiak.

“Obviously it’s nice to have a familiar face to go with, and now we don’t have to find roommates. When we went on our tour, Ben Tkachuk came out to lunch with us, and he had nothing but good things to say about the program. He mentioned how close-knit the team was, and it reminded me of our team in Melfort this year. They won a bronze medal at Nationals, and we won a silver, so lots of success comes from a team that’s tight.”
