Novak is making the most of his time with the Blue Bombers
Lane Novak is appreciative and now looking to seize the moment. The former Huskie linebacker has dressed for both of the 2025 Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ regular season games after being selected 45th overall in the Canadian college draft in April. The Balgonie, Saskatchewan product, who played with the Huskies from 2020 to 2024, has been a part of Winnipeg’s “core four” on special teams. (Kick-off, kick-off return, punt and punt return) The Blue Bombers opened the season with 34-20 and 27-14 victories over the B.C. Lions.
Just as it was with the Huskies, Novak is being coached by several former Canadian Football League players including head coach Mike O’Shea, defensive coordinator Jordan Younger and special teams coach Mike Miller. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of coaches to play for”, he said. “You understand why they are CFL coaches when you see them operate.”
In his four seasons at USask, Novak was coached by Scott Flory, Jerry Friesen and Warren Muzika who also had impressive CFL careers. He also has no shortage of big game experience, winning two Hardy Cups, two Uteck Bowls and he has also played in two Vanier Cup games. That standard of excellence has prepped him for this CFL opportunity.
“We expected to go into every game and win. That’s how it was all my years as a Huskie”, he said. “Showing up here, the coaches in Winnipeg have the same mentality. It’s prepared me mentally and psychologically because I already have that state of mind. You talk to the Huskie guys that are in the CFL now, they all say the same thing. (The Huskies) prepped us and gave us the mindset to succeed.”
