Frank scores two touchdowns in victory over the Bears
Ryker Frank caught an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and scored on a 33 yard fourth quarter run as the Huskies defeated the Alberta Golden Bears 29-20 in the season opener for both teams at Foote Field on Friday night. The fifth year Huskie finished the night with 155 all-purpose yards.
Third-year Saskatchewan starter, Anton Amundrud, had 248 yards in passing with two touchdowns. Rhett Vavra caught a five yard pass from Amundrud in the third quarter while, defensively, Seth Hundeby scored on a 46-yard pick six in the second quarter.
Bear quarterback, Eli Hetlinger, had 340 yards in passing with a touchdown toss to Kolby Hurford. Seth Poelzer, whose father is a Huskie alum, had 80 yards rushing and scored one touchdown for Alberta. The Bears jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead and held a 22-20 lead until the mid-way point of the fourth quarter when Frank scored the game winning touchdown.
The Bears used some on-side quick kicks and receiver Carter Kettyle kept one second half drive alive by faking a punt and running close to mid-field from his own goal line. It was a game that didn’t have a lot of flow at times becuase of undisciplined play. The Huskies took 16 penalties for 168 yards, while the Bears were flagged 19 times for 140 yards.
