It was a Homecoming Game to remember at Griffiths Stadium on Friday night. There was a big tailgate party, great weather, the annual third quarter toga run in front of over 9,500 fans and a dominant performance from the home team. The Huskies beat up on the UBC Thunderbirds, 51-14 in a match up of 1 and 0 teams. With the students back on campus the atmosphere was electric. “You can’t deny the energy”, said head coach Scott Flory. “The support we get makes me really happy.”

The Huskies did have over 600 yards in offense in the football game but in the first half, relied on kicker Lukas Scott for most of their points. Outside of a Daniel Wiebe 79-yard touchdown catch, Saskatchewan rode four Scott field goals to a 19-7 half-time lead. “Our red zone stuff was not good” (in the first half) said Flory. “We flipped the script in the second half and had success with it.

Wiebe scored his second touchdown on a seven-yard toss from quarterback Anton Amundrud midway through the third quarter. That was the first of four second half majors for the Huskies. Running back Jayvin Boynton scored on a four-yard run on the final play of the quarter, while Dawson Lennea and Aulain Penner found the endzone in the fourth quarter.

Amundrud had 443 yards in passing and four touchdown passes. “I thought in the first half we didn’t’ execute in the red zone”, he said. When asked about the 32-point second half which included touchdowns from four different players he said “That’s the luxury of our offense. We have athletes all over the field that can make plays.”

Saskatchewan linebacker Jacob Goldstone had an interception and a sack for the Huskies. Charlie Parks also had a sack and now has three on the season. Thunderbird first-year quarterback, Drew Viotto, had 234 yards passing with one touchdown and one interception.

The Huskies join the U of R Rams as the only undefeated teams in Canada West football after two weeks of play. Regina beat Alberta 47-23 on Friday night. Calgary pulled out a 15-14 win over Manitoba. The Huskies visit the 0-2 Bisons on Saturday, September 13th. “Manitoba is a good football team, and they are going to give us a good challenge”, said Amundrud. When asked about facing the winless Bisons in week three Flory said, “0 and 2 isn’t always 0 and 2. I’m assuming they are a good football team.”

The September 13th Huskie-Bison broadcast with Wray Morrison and Rich Gabruch starts at 3:45 PM on the free HuskieFAN app, live from IG Field in Winnipeg.
