Saturday night special

Despite missing the top passer in Canada West football, the USask Huskies still found a way to pull out a 31-24 win over the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday night at Griffiths Stadium. Second-year quarterback Jake Farrell found out “later in the week” that he’d be starting in place of veteran Anton Amundrud who did not dress. Farrell leaned on a cast of veteran players to keep the game close before connecting with a newcomer to pull out a dramatic victory. The Holy Cross graduate hit Daniel Wiebe for a 55-yard strike late in the first quarter to give the home side a 7-0 advantage. Midway through the second quarter, Farrell went to Dawson Lennea for a 17-yard touchdown as the Huskies went up 14-2.

First year Bear quarterback Trey Reider returned to his hometown of Saskatoon and played inspired football. The former Saskatoon Hilltop helped orchestrate a late first half, five-play, 31-yard drive that ended with a Duncan Critch two-yard touchdown run, cutting the Huskie advantage to six at the break.

The lead changed hands three times in the third quarter. Golden Bear receiver Carter Kettyle caught an eight-yard pass from Reider as Alberta went up by one. Saskatchewan responded as fifth year running back Ryker Frank found the end zone on an eight-yard major as the Huskies regained the lead 21-15. With the score, Frank set a school record for most career touchdowns (31) breaking the marks of Terry Eisler and Colton Klassen.

On the final play of the third quarter, with the Huskies ahead 21-17, Reider connected with Kettyle for a 62-yard pass and run play and Alberta was up 24-21. Reider, who led the Golden Bears to their first win of the season against UBC on September 26th, had 238 yards in passing and two touchdowns at Griffiths Stadium.

With the score tied at 24, the Huskies took possession of the ball at their 53 yard-line with less than three minutes remaining. Four plays later, from the Bear 28-yard line, Farrell found first-year receiver Mason Grabowski in the endzone for his first touchdown as a Huskie.

Farrell had 276 yards in passing and three touchdowns. Frank had 87 yards on the ground. On defense, Reece McCormick, Seth Hundeby and Charlie Parks all had USask sacks while John Stoll had a late game interception.

The Huskies remain in top spot in the Canada West standings with a 5 and 1 record. Regina is also 5 and 1 following an 18-12 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday afternoon. Saskatchewan now visits UBC on Friday, October 17th at Thunderbird Stadium. The game can be hard on the free HuskieFAN app, with pre-game coverage starting at 6:45 PM.
