USask women’s hockey team hosts TWU on October 17-18 weekend

Oct 14, 2025 | 2:20 PM

After a weekend split in the opening weekend of the Canada West women’s hockey season, the Huskies (1-1) host the Trinity Western Spartans on October 17th and 18th at Merlis Belsher Place. The Mount Royal Cougars defeated the Huskies 3-1 in Calgary on October 3rd. USask recovered with a 1-0 win over MRU the next night.

“On opening weekend, I thought you saw what would be indicative of a youngish team”, said head coach Steve Kook. “We had a good talk and a good video session on the Saturday and got back to what made us successful in the pre-season. It was night and day.”

The head coach was pleased with team goaltending in Calgary. Second year goalie, Clara Juca, made 23 saves in the shut-out win on Saturday. Kook said veteran keeper, Colby Wilson, played very well in the first game of the season also as the Cougars came “downhill” at Saskatchewan early in the hockey game.

Kook admits that a week two bye wasn’t ideal for his team, however there are players that can make the most of the schedule. Veteran forward Paris Oleksyn, who missed a good portion of last season, didn’t suit up during the opening weekend due to injury and there were delays in getting forward Peppi Virtanen’s paperwork together as she joins the team from Finland.

The Spartans are 2 and 2 on the season. TWU opened with an overtime and a shoot-out win over Alberta in the opening weekend of the season, then dropped back-to-back games against UBC on October 10th and 11th. “I think they (Spartans) have twelve 5th year players on their squad”, Kook said. “They’re physical and they are going to be pretty composed with some good depth on their team this year.”

Steve Kook chatted with HuskieFAN’s Wray Morrison on the October 14th edition of The Coach’s Show.
