The Huskie women’s hockey team earned two points in the Canada West standings but also suffered two tough overtime losses to the Trinity Western Spartans on the October 17-18 weekend at Merlis Belsher Place.

On Friday, Huskie veteran Shelby Williamson scored a third period power play goal to force extra time, but 22 seconds into the fourth period, Presleigh Giesbrecht buried the game winner for a 2-1 Trinity Western victory. Kate Fawcett made 14 stops in the Spartan net, while USask goaltender Colby Wilson kicked aside 26 Spartan shots.

On Saturday the home side let a 3-0 second period get away in a 4-3 overtime defeat. Kaysah Nurani and Kara Mitenko buried back-to-back markers 2:17 apart to help the Huskies to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. USask widened the lead when Paris Oleksyn scored a minute into the middle frame.

TWU responded with a pair of second period tallies from Chloe Ried and Kayley Ledoux. Mid-way through the third period Jordyn Matthews, who also scored on Friday night, tied the game on the power play. Reid struck again 13 seconds in to overtime to lead the Spartans to victory. Second-year Huskie goalie Clara Juca was impressive, making 24 saves.

The Huskies have four points, four games into the Canada West women’s hockey season. USask visits the Regina Cougars on Friday, October 24th in the first game of a home and home series. On Saturday, October 25th, the teams will meet again at Merlis Belsher Place at 7:00 PM.
