Dogs win thanks to a 24-point second quarter
All of Saskatchewan’s points came in the second quarter in a 24-10 win over the UBC T-Birds on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver. Saskatchewan’s first touchdown was set up by a fake punt as running back Ryker Frank took a direct snap and carried the ball to the T-Bird three-yard line. That set up a Kayden Miller score with just less than six minutes remaining in the first half. “That fake…it feels like we’ve been practicing that for a couple of years now”. said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. “It was just great execution by those guys.”
On the next possession, a Jake Farrell TD toss to Daniel Wiebe capped off a 6-play, 43-yard drive and the Huskies took an 11-point lead at 14-3. Farrell, who was making just his second USPORTS start in place of veteran Anton Amundrud, had 171 yards in passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. “I thought (Jake) operated well”, said Flory. “He made some plays with his legs. That’s the thing he can and has to do. If you can extend drives with your feet every now and again, that’s hard to defend. He can run, but he’s not looking to run.”
Saskatchewan’s defense set up the third touchdown as linebacker Seth Hundeby intercepted a Drew Viotto pass and returned it to the UBC 12-yard line. On the next play, Farrell connected with Wiebe again and the Huskies were up 21-3 in the final minute of the first half.
It was a penalty-filled game as the Huskies were flagged 14 times for 180 yards. The Thunderbirds took 11 penalties for 136 yards. When asked about his teams’ play outside of the second quarter, Flory said “It was a slow start. A few penalties here and there and we couldn’t’ quite get our feet under ourselves. It was a little sloppy, but I told the team that I’m proud of them. It’s hard to win on the road and we did that.”
