All of Saskatchewan’s points came in the second quarter in a 24-10 win over the UBC T-Birds on Friday night at Thunderbird Stadium in Vancouver. Saskatchewan’s first touchdown was set up by a fake punt as running back Ryker Frank took a direct snap and carried the ball to the T-Bird three-yard line. That set up a Kayden Miller score with just less than six minutes remaining in the first half. “That fake…it feels like we’ve been practicing that for a couple of years now”. said Huskie head coach Scott Flory. “It was just great execution by those guys.”

On the next possession, a Jake Farrell TD toss to Daniel Wiebe capped off a 6-play, 43-yard drive and the Huskies took an 11-point lead at 14-3. Farrell, who was making just his second USPORTS start in place of veteran Anton Amundrud, had 171 yards in passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions. “I thought (Jake) operated well”, said Flory. “He made some plays with his legs. That’s the thing he can and has to do. If you can extend drives with your feet every now and again, that’s hard to defend. He can run, but he’s not looking to run.”

Saskatchewan’s defense set up the third touchdown as linebacker Seth Hundeby intercepted a Drew Viotto pass and returned it to the UBC 12-yard line. On the next play, Farrell connected with Wiebe again and the Huskies were up 21-3 in the final minute of the first half.

It was a penalty-filled game as the Huskies were flagged 14 times for 180 yards. The Thunderbirds took 11 penalties for 136 yards. When asked about his teams’ play outside of the second quarter, Flory said “It was a slow start. A few penalties here and there and we couldn’t’ quite get our feet under ourselves. It was a little sloppy, but I told the team that I’m proud of them. It’s hard to win on the road and we did that.”

When asked about the status of Anton Amundrud, who is the number one passer in the country but has now missed back to back games, Flory said “It’s just week to week. He’s been practicing, he’s just not cleared to play. Hopefully he’ll be good to go next week and if not Jake is ready to go. It’s nothing serious. It’s just a matter of time.”

UBC first-year quarterback Drew Viotto finished with 306 yards passing and one touchdown toss to Trey Montour late in the fourth quarter. Defensively Ben Sangmuah and Niko Kanagawa had interceptions for the Thunderbirds..

The first place Huskies are now 6 and 1 in the Canada West standings. 5 and 1 Regina visits Alberta on Saturday afternoon. UBC falls to 2 and 5 with the loss and will now need to beat Regina next weekend and get some help to secure a playoff spot.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday, October 25th, when the Manitoba Bisons visit Griffiths Stadium for a 2:00 PM start.
