After the national championship banner was raised to the ceiling, there seemed to be no ceiling on the Huskies’ offense on Friday night, as the women’s basketball team trounced the MacEwan Griffins 87-28 in the Canada West opener at the PAC on Friday night.

Last seasons’ U SPORTS female athlete of the year, Gage Grassick, led the way for U Sask with a 21-point performance. The Griffins saw lots of Grassick early as she poured n 13 points in the first ten minutes of the game as the home side opened up a quick 26-5 lead.

MacEwan’s only double-digit quarter was in the second when they put up 11 points, but the Griffins still trailed 49-16 at the break. Veteran Tea DeMong had 11 of her 17 points in the third quarter, while Logan Reider connected on four, three-point attempts as part of an 18-point game.

The U Sask men’s team lost an 82-80 heartbreaker to the Griffins. The visitors, who were led by Elisha Ampofo with 14 points, rallied with a 27 point second quarter.

Despite four Huskies scoring in double figures, the home side will look back to their poor free-throw shooting as a major reason for not starting in the win column. Jamie Campbell’s team went 14 of 28 from the charity stripe, a problem that plagued the team last year

Third-year Easton Thimm, who spent time this summer with the CEBL Saskatchewan Rattlers, finished with a game-high 21 points and 18 rebounds. Mohamaed Mahadhi (18 points), Emmanuel Bonsu (11 points), and Dylan Miller (11 points) also hit the double digit scoring mark in a losing effort.

Both sides elected to rotate their benches early and very often, a move that may produce yet another back-and-forth four quarter affair at the PAC Saturday evening.

Lisa Thomaidis and company will look to complete the weekend sweep, while Jamie Campbell will look to split their first homestand of the year on Saturday night starting at 5:00 PM at the PAC
