Huskies put hammer down
The Huskie men’s hockey team wasted little time in showing their dominance in an 8-1 win over the Regina Cougars at Merlis Belsher Place on Friday night. In the first period, the first two goals came 58 seconds apart. Newcomer Conner Roulette kicked off a four-point night with a goal at the 11:33 mark. Liam Keeler scored his first of the season 58 seconds later and the Huskies were up by two, 12 and a half minutes into the game.
Raphael Pelletier, who had a three-point game, buried his second of the season with five minutes left in the first frame and that was followed by a Cade Hayes marker 1:33 later. The Huskies had a comfortable 4-0 lead after twenty minutes of play, having outshot their opposition 15-6.
More of the same in the second frame. 3rd-year defenceman Cole Jordan beat Cougar goaltender Justin Maric midway through the period and in the dying seconds, the Huskie leading scorer, Chantz Petruic, scored his sixth goal in five games and it was 6-0 after 40 minutes.
U Sask goaltender Bryan Thomson stopped 20 of 21 shots for his second win of the season. Cougar veteran Matt Culling broke Thomson’s shutout bid at 9:02 of the third period. Saskatchewan finished up strong with late goals from Landon Kosior and 2nd-year Huskie Braxton Buckberger. Maric stopped 32 of the Saskatchewan’s 40 shots in the Regina net.
