Petruic stays hot as Huskies sweep provincial rivals

The hottest stick in Canada West men’s hockey belongs to Chantz Petruic. The fifth-year forward recorded his third multi-goal game in four outings, scoring twice to help lead the Huskies men’s hockey team to a 5-1 win and a weekend sweep of the Regina Cougars at Co-operators Arena on Saturday.

Petruic’s first of the game was also his 50th career tally and after being held pointless in the Huskies first two games this season, he now has a conference-leading eight goals and two assists on a four-game point streak.

One night after hitting the net four times in the first period of an 8-1 victory on home ice, the Huskies jumped out to another quick start in the rematch. Conner Roulette opened the scoring five minutes in with a bit of cleverness, setting up behind the net and banking the puck off the pads of Cougars goaltender Damon Cunningham for his fourth goal in as many games.

Midway through the frame, Rhett Rhinehart doubled the Dogs advantage on the power play with a shot from the high slot that found its way through traffic. The defenceman also had an assist in the game to go with his first goal and now has nine points in six contests to start the season.

Then it was time for Petruic to make his presence known, first sniping one past Cunningham on the rush to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead after one period, then scoring again 58 seconds into the middle frame with a seeing-eye shot from the left point.

The Cougars got on the board at the 11:39 mark as Turner McMillen fired a wrister from the right wing that beat Huskies netminder Jordan Kooy over the right shoulder. Regina continued to battle as the period progressed but could not make any more headway, trailing 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.

The game got bogged down in the third with multiple penalties on both sides as tensions began to rise, but neither team could find any traction on the power play. Braxton Buckberger completed the scoring with six and a half minutes remaining, netting his second goal in as many nights moments after a Dogs man advantage expired.

A pair of Huskie rookies recorded their first U SPORTS points in the win, with defenceman Karter Prosofsky notching a pair of assists in his season debut and Zack Somers adding a helper in his second game with the team.

Saskatchewan finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play while Regina was scoreless on six man-up situations of its own. Kooy earned his third win in three starts this season, making 26 saves, while Cunningham absorbed the loss despite stopping 46 of 51 Huskie shots.

The Huskies have now won four straight games to push their record to 5-1, and will return home to face the Manitoba Bisons in a pair of contests next weekend. Friday’s game is a 7 p.m. start at Merlis Belsher Place and will be broadcast on the free HuskieFAN app.
