Saskatchewan starts strong and hangs on

“There was lots of good stuff, but we just have to make sure we play the whole game.” That was Huskie head coach Brandin Cote’s take on Friday night’s 6-3 win over the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place. U Sask stormed out to a 2-0 first period lead with goals from Chantz Petruic and Keaton Sorenson.

The home side picked up where they left off early in middle frame when veteran forward, Dawson Holt, scored his third of the season on the power play. Two and a half minutes later Josh Pillar made it a four-goal game and Carter Stebbings added a Huskie marker in the final seconds of the period to make it 5-0 after 40 minutes as Saskatchewan outshot Manitoba 35-11. “I liked a lot of our game”, Cote said. “When we were playing, we were on top of the puck. We played with pace.”

Manitoba dictated play in the third period, and it led to a rally. First-year Bison Lucas Brennan, who scored a game winning goal against Mount Royal Friday, broke the Huskie shutout at the 4:21 mark to cut the Saskatchewan lead to four. Shortly after Skyler Bruce made it 5-2, fifth-year Bison, Cody Behun, beat U Sask goaltender Jordan Kooy and it was 5-3 with four and a half minutes remaining. That’s as close as the visitors would get as Dawson Holt scored his second of the night into an empty net with 29 seconds left. The Bisons outshot the Huskies 16-12 in the last 20 minutes.

“I don’t think our legs or our minds were in Saskatoon for the first 45 minutes of the game”, said Bison head coach Gordon Burnett. “We decided we were going to find some life late. That’s not how you win hockey games in this league, especially against a real good Huskie team.”

Cote commented on letting the U of M battling back to make a game of it. “I didn’t really like our third period. They are hard games to play when you feel it’s out of reach, but you have to keep playing and have respect for your opponent.”

Kooy made 24 saves for his fourth win of the season. Braeden Holt, who has played in all seven of the Manitoba games so far this season, allowed five goals on 46 Huskie shots. Saskatchewan was 1-for-5 on the power play while the U of M was 0-for-2. The Huskies improved to 6 and 1 on the season, while Manitoba dipped to 3 and 3 with an overtime loss.

The second game of the series is at 5:00 PM on Saturday afternoon at Merlis Belsher Place and can be heard on the free HuskieFAN app.
