Huskies win first shootout of season over Bisons

Nov 1, 2025 | 11:23 PM

The Huskies women’s hockey team absorbed several punches but their goaltender kept them in the fight long enough to earn the TKO in a 2-1 shootout victory over the Manitoba Bisons on Saturday in Winnipeg.

Peppi Virtanen scored Saskatchewan’s lone goal in regulation and added another in the shootout before Sara Kendall sealed the victory in round three, but the Huskies would not have made it that far if not for a standout effort by Colby Wilson, who made 45 saves through regulation and overtime before stopping two of three in the skills competition.

The victory gave the Huskies their first weekend sweep of the season following a 3-1 victory on Friday and as they did in that game, they drew first blood in the opening period. After winning a faceoff in the Bisons zone, Virtanen beat her check to the front of the net and buried the rebound off a Jacquelyne Chief point shot for her second goal of the season.

As the game progressed, Manitoba began to spend increasing amounts of time in the USask zone, but Wilson came up big time and time again. It wasn’t until early in the third period that the Bisons managed to break through and it took a perfectly executed play to do it. With her team on the power play, Dana Goertzen won a puck battle in the corner and skated out to the right circle before threading a backdoor pass to Julia Bird, who quickly slotted it home before Wilson could get across.

The Bisons continued to press but could not solve the Huskies goalie again, even after getting another power play with 90 seconds left in overtime. The hosts outshot their visitors 8-0 in the extra frame but thanks in large part to Wilson, a shootout was needed to determine a winner.

After the first three shooters failed to convert, Virtanen stepped up for Saskatchewan and coolly slid a backhand through the legs of Manitoba netminder Cypress Classen to put the Huskies on top. Kelsey Huibers responded for the Bisons, setting the stage for Kendall, who pulled the puck to her backhand and lifted it past Classen for the deciding goal.

The Dogs now sit at 4-2-2 on the season with all four wins coming on the road. The Bisons fell to 1-4-3, earning a point in defeat. Manitoba was 1-for-4 on the power play while Saskatchewan went 0-for-2. The final shot tally was 46-20 in favour of the Herd.

The Huskies will now try to forge some success on home ice as they return to Merlis Belsher Place to face the Calgary Dinos next weekend, with the opener of the two-game set scheduled for Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the action live on the free HuskieFAN app.
