Manitoba earns series split with Huskies
The Manitoba Bisons beat the Huskies 4-3 on Saturday night, earning a split of the Canada West men’s hockey two-game series at Merlis Belsher Place. After suffering a 6-3 loss on Friday night, due in part to a less than inspired start, the Bisons were sharp in the early stages of the series finale.
Manitoba took early 2-0 lead as Caden Zaplitny and Jackson Arpin gave the visitors a two goal advantage less than eight minutes into the hockey game. U Sask responded in the final minute of the opening frame when veteran Dawson Holt scored his fifth of the season.
The Bison tenacity continued in the second period, outshooting Saskatchewan 12-7. Kaycee Koyle gave Manitoba a 3-1 lead midway through the frame, three and a half minutes later Dawson Paternak scored to make it 4-1 at the 13:55 mark. That was the end of the night for Huskie starter Bryan Thomson who allowed 4 goals on 16 shots.
Saskatchewan pressured the Bisons hard in the third period and pulled to within one on goals by Chase Bertholet and Jarrett Penner. Bison goaltender Matthew Kieper, who made his first start of the season, helped keep his team in the game by stopping 16 of 18 third period shots. Kieper made 31 saves on the night for the win.
