Facing the first-place Dinos
“It stings a bit not to have those two points.” That was Brandin Cote’s reaction to Saturday’s 4-3 loss to the Manitoba Bisons at Merlis Belsher Place. Calling it a ‘frustrating result’ the head coach has addressed, but is not not dwelling on, three periods of hockey on the weekend that did not go the teams’ way.
Manitoba rallied with three third period goals in Friday’s 6-3 Huskie win, then on Saturday the Bisons jumped out to a strong start, taking a two-goal advantage eight minutes into the first period and never gave up the lead. “Give them credit”, said Cote. “They played really hard and responded well in the middle three periods of the weekend.” The U of M is now 4-3 and 1 on the season.
Fifth-year goaltender Jordan Kooy registered his fourth win of the season on Friday night, while Bryan Thomson (2-2) allowed four goals in 33 minutes of action before being pulled on Saturday in the 4-3 defeat. “I think its (goaltending) been a little up and down for us lately”, Cote said. “I think both of our guys would admit that. We definitely have a group that is going to give us a chance to win. I have no doubt about that.”
This weekend the 6 and 2 Huskies visit the east division leading Calgary Dinos in Friday and Saturday contests. Calgary is 8 and 2 following back-to-back wins over the MacEwan Griffins last weekend. After not meeting team potential in the Manitoba series, Cote is looking forward to the November 7th (8:00 PM Saskatchewan time) and 8th (7:00 PM Saskatchewan time) matchups at Father David Bauer Arena. “We all have to take a step and elevate our game”, he said. There is no better time for us to go in (to Calgary) and face a first-place team.”
