Huskies beaten in series opener
Steve Kook’s hopes of a strong start didn’t exactly materialize on Friday night as the Calgary Dinos downed the U Sask Huskies 7-2 in Canada West women’s hockey at Merlis Belsher Place. The visitors struck for three goals in an eight-minute span to take a quick lead.
Fifth year Dino forward Brooklyn Anderson, who was playing in her first game of the season, gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 6:29 of the first period. It was the first of two for the Shellbrook, Saskatchewan product. Less than three and a half minutes later the Dinos’ leading scorer Evelyn Lawrence buried her third of the season. Another Calgary veteran, Bree Kennedy, lifted Calgary to a 3-0 lead 14:30 into the hockey game. U of C outshot Saskatchewan 12-6 after 20 minutes of play.
Saskatchewan born players on the Dino roster did more damage in the second period. White City’s Jada Johns, Prince Albert’s Sophia Zuck and Anderson all struck in the middle frame to make it a 6-0 game. The Huskies held the U of C to seven shots in the period, but the potent Dinos made good on their chances.
Special teams played a role in the third period as both of Saskatchewan’s goals came on the player advantage. Kahlen Wisener and Bronwyn Boucher scored power play goals for USask, while Eden Carius rounded out the scoring for the Dinos with a power play goal.
