Kubongo’s 85-yard punt return lifts Huskies to victory
It’s a return to the Vanier Cup for the USask Huskie football team. The Huskies defeated the Queen’s Golden Gaels 22-11 in Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl at Griffiths Stadium. The Huskies, who were a perfect 6 and 0 at home this season, got the jump on a Golden Gaels team that was 6 and 0 in road games this season.
First-year quarterback Jake Farrell hit veteran receiver Daniel Wiebe on a 41-yard strike in the first quarter to give the home side an early 7-1 lead. A huge special teams return brought the crowd to its feet and gave the Huskies major momentum in the second quarter. Daniel Kubongo scored on an 85-yard return off of a Matt Driver punt, as the Huskies opened up a 14-1 advantage.
Queen’s fought to keep it close in the third quarter as veteran quarterback Alex Vreeken connected with Cedric Smith for a 17-yard major, cutting the USask lead to 14-8. Vreeken had 388 yards in passing for the Golden Gaels.
Just as it did a week earlier in the Hardy Cup against Regina, Saskatchewan’s defense tightened up in the fourth quarter, holding the Gaels to three points in the last 15 minutes. Huskie kicker Lukas Scott made good on 44- and 24-yard field goal attempts in the final quarter to put the game out of reach.
