Huskies visit the Griffins in Edmonton
The Huskies are Alberta bound. The USask men’s hockey team visits the MacEwan Griffins on Friday and Saturday night. The Dogs, who are coming off of a bye, settled for one point in a November 7-8 weekend series in Calgary. The Dinos doubled Saskatchewan 4-2 in the opener, the Huskies earned their point in a 3-2 shootout loss in the series finale.
Huskie coach Brandin Cote was honest in assessment of his team against the east division leaders. “I didn’t feel our Friday game was good enough”, he said. “On Saturday we took a step. I liked a lot of what I saw.” Saskatchewan enters the series with a 6-3 and 1 record and sit 11 points back of Calgary with four games in hand.
Defensively, the Huskies have allowed just 2.7 goals per game. Veteran goaltender Jordan Kooy has dressed for six games this season…first year ‘Dog’ Bryan Thompson has played in four. Cote believes his team can be even better in its own end. “As a team, we can be more consistent.”
The Griffins, who are in the west division of the Canada West conference this season, are 6 and 6 with an overtime loss and a shoot-out loss this weekend. Kayden Chabot is one of MacEwan’s offensive weapons with 16 points in 14 games. “They work. You’ve got to get on them early”, Cote said. “I feel our guys will be ready to go.”
