A Vanier Cup Primer

Nov 21, 2025 | 8:54 AM

Saturday marks the third trip to the Vanier Cup in five seasons for the USask Huskies. Head coach Scott Flory led Saskatchewan to the 2021 and 2022 championship games; however, the Huskies fell to Western 27-21 four seasons ago, and three years ago lost to Laval 30-24. Saskatchewan’s last championship title was 27 seasons ago…a 24-17 win over Concordia at the Skydome in 1998 The Huskies have competed in seven Vanier Cup games since.

The Carabins and Huskies are both loaded with players who have Vanier Cup experience. Montreal has at least 17 offensive and defensive starters that played on the 2023 championship team that defeated UBC 16-9. At least nine Saskatchewan starters played in the 2022 Vanier Cup.

Running back Ryker Frank, who led the conference with 7.5 yards/carry, offensive lineman Derek Beaubien and receiver Daniel Wiebe, who led Canada West with 115 yards/receiving per game are among the Saskatchewan players who will compete in their last university football game on Saturday. Fifth-year players on defense include linebackers Jayden Engel, John Stoll and Roughrider draft pick Seth Hundeby.

On Thursday, Hundeby (middle linebacker) was named the 2025 Presidents’ Trophy winner as U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year. The Rider draft pick had 41.5 tackles and three sacks this season. He is the fourth player in program history to win the Presidents’ Trophy.

This is Montreal’s fourth trip to the Vanier Cup in 11 seasons. They lost in 2015 and 2019 championship games to Canada West opponents. Marco Iadeluca has been the head coach of the Carabins since 2020. He has been part of three Vanier Cup winning teams, two as an assistant and one as a head coach. (2010-Laval, 2015, 2023-Montreal)

This is the second time that Flory and Iadeluca have met, as head coaches, in a U SPORTS playoff game. The Huskies defeated the Carabins 14-10 in the 2021 Uteck Bowl at CEPSUM Stadium in Montreal.

Both teams will be led by first year starting quarterbacks. Jake Farrell, who took over as Huskie offense on October 4th, is 6 and 0 with 1,368 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and 6 interceptions this season. Montreal’s Pepe Gonzalez averaged 285.5 yards passing per game and was second in the country with 19 touchdown passes in 2025.

Huskie head coach Scott Flory chatted with HuskieFAN about last weekend’s 22-11 win over Queen’s in the Mitchell Bowl at Griffiths Stadium and about facing the Carabins on Saturday in the Vanier Cup.
