Petruic’s five-point night powers Huskies to win over Griffins

Chantz Petruic’s second hat trick of the season highlighted a five-point performance as the Huskies men’s hockey team returned to action with a 6-3 win over the MacEwan Griffins on Friday in Edmonton.

The Dogs started and finished strong while overcoming a shaky stretch in between to snap a three-game skid and improve to 7-3-1 on the season, maintaining their hold on second place in the East Division standings.

“It wasn’t a perfect game by any means but I thought our start was really good. I liked the majority of our first period, lots of zone time, could have been up more,” head coach Brandin Cote said. “Start of the second, I don’t know why but a couple maybe inopportune bounces go their way but what I really liked was our last ten in the second and our response to that. The power play clicked, we got a couple there and then our third was solid. Can’t really complain about the effort.”

Playing their first game since November 8, the Huskies came out with plenty of energy and opened the scoring just 1:14 in as Edmonton native Liam Keeler buried a rebound for his second goal of the season. A few minutes later, Petruic tipped a Ty Prefontaine shot past Griffins goaltender Zac Onyskiw, becoming the first player in the Canada West to reach the ten-goal mark.

However, the Griffins answered back immediately with Carter Chorney beating a screened Bryan Thomson just 32 seconds later, cutting the Dogs lead to one after twenty minutes of play.

MacEwan took charge to begin the middle frame and leveled the score just shy of the four-minute mark as Liam Hughes jammed a rebound past Thomson, then just over two minutes later Myles Gauld put the Griffins in front 3-2 with a seeing-eye backhander.

But the Huskies regained control as the period progressed. Petruic tied the score at three, getting behind the Griffins defence and gloving down a 100-foot stretch pass before wristing a shot over Onyskiw’s shoulder. Sixty-three seconds later, on the Dogs’ first man advantage of the game, Conner Roulette rifled home his sixth goal of the season to put Saskatchewan back in front.

The Huskies power play struck again midway through the third, this time on a 5-on-3 as Landon Kosior netted his second goal of the season to go with a pair of assists earlier in the game.

The Griffins pulled Onyskiw for an extra attacker with three minutes left but could not score and Petruic completed his hat trick with an empty net marker. The fifth-year forward also had two assists in the victory for his second career five-point game. The other came in the very same rink on January 20, 2024, when he tallied a goal and four assists in a 7-2 win over MacEwan.

Petruic’s latest scoring burst came after being a healthy scratch in Saskatchewan’s previous outing. Needless to say, his head coach was pleased with the veteran’s response.

“He took it the right way and all the credit to him. At times, unfortunately, you’ve gotta do that but in the long run if it’s gonna benefit our team and benefit him, then all the power to him,” Cote said.

The Huskies power play went 2-for-3 on the night while their conference-leading penalty kill continued to excel, nullifying all three Griffin man advantages. Thomson made 22 saves to earn his third win of the season. Onyskiw stopped 19 shots as the Griffins fell to 6-7-2.

The teams will wrap up their season series on Saturday with puck drop scheduled for 5 p.m. MT (6 p.m. Sask). Fans can listen to the broadcast on the free HuskieFAN app or online at huskiefan.ca.
