Huskies visit the number one team in the country
“The BC trip is always fun.” That’s the take from USask women’s hockey coach Steve Kook as the Huskies visit the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver for November 28th and 29th contests. Saskatchewan has a 4 and 1 road record, have six wins and points in eight of 12 wins this season.
After blanking the MacEwan Griffins 2-0 on November 21st, the Huskies let a 1-0, third period, lead get away in a 3-2 defeat the next night. The Griffins scored three goals in a two-minute span. “I thought we played ok in game two”, said Kook. We were missing a little bit of that killer instinct. It’s a learning process for us.”
The Huskies have two newcomers at centre that have had a sizeable impact on the team so far this season. Finland’s Peppi Virtanen, who had a goal in Saturday’s Huskie loss, has six points in eight games. Another first-year centre, Jessica Anderson, scored her first goal of the season in the November 21st victory. “She’s a little bit of a Swiss army knife”, said Kook about Anderson. “She’s really good in the face off circle and her 200-foot game has gotten better.”
USask faces a Thunderbird team that has won 13 of 14 games so far this season and are the number one ranked team in the country. UBC is led by veteran forward Grace Elliott who has 19 points in 14 games and goaltender Elise Hugens who has a 0.72 goals-against average in 7 appearances this season.
