Huskies overcome two deficits in shootout win over T-Birds
The Huskie men’s hockey team answered the bell in a hard fought 3-2 shootout win over the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at Merlis Belsher Place. The T-Birds, who had suffered just one regulation loss entering the contest, jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead on a Huskie own goal as a Cyle McNabb shot went off of Huskie forward Chantz Petruic and into the USask net late in the first period.
Petruic, a fifth year forward, played a huge role in the Huskie turnaround and subsequent win. In the late stages of the second period, on a two-man advantage, Petruic buried his 13th goal of the season to tie the game 1-1.
UBC regained the lead near the mid-way point of the third period when third year forward Jake Wright notched his eighth goal of the season. Saskatchewan kept the pressure up in the final half of the third period and forced the Thunderbirds to take three penalties in the final 20 minutes. On the Huskies’ final power play chance, Liam Keeler tipped in a Petruic point shot to the tie game at two with 2:37 remaining in regulation time.
The stats sheet showed that the T-Birds outshot the Huskies 4-1 in the five minute 3-on-3 overtime session. USask goaltender Jordan Kooy made 26 stops prior to the shootout then turned away Reiley Kotai, Ty Thorpe and Jake Lee, before Petruic scored the shootout winner for the home side.
