Huskies put a wrap on 2025 against the U of R

Dec 4, 2025 | 6:55 AM

The Huskie men’s hockey team wraps up the 2025 portion of its schedule on the December 5-6 weekend with a home and home series against the Regina Cougars. USask swept Regina in the teams’ first weekend set in October, but Huskie coach Brandin Cote believes this weekend’s opponent is feeling more confident now than they did earlier in the season. “They are coming along”, he said. “They never make it easy. These are games we have to have. The focus is on us in the way we execute.”

The Cougars have just two wins in 14 regular season games, however the U of R is coming off of a couple of hard fought one goal losses to the University of Manitoba from the November 28th-29th weekend. Blake Heward leads Regina in points, while Matt Culling and Jaxon Steele have five goals each this season.

Saskatchewan is 9-4 and 1 and sits a point back of Mount Royal for second spot in the Canada West, east division with two games in hand on MRU. Fifth year, Huskie forward Chantz Petruic has 20 points in 12 regular season games and scored once in regulation time, once in the shootout and assisted on the tying goal in last Friday’s 3-2 win over the UBC Thunderbirds.

“He’s progressed and matured in the program in those big moments where you need a goal”, said Cote. “We’ve worked with (Petruic) on developing his holistic game. He’s gotten much more consistent in his play away from the puck, that’s helped him have the puck more. I’ve really enjoyed working with him.”

Saskatchewan’s power play was 5-for-14 in a 3-2 shootout win and a 7-4 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds on the November 28th-29th weekend. Special teams is a specific area of focus for Cote and the Huskies. The USask power play is now running at 26.3%, while the team has the best penalty kill in the conference at 87.3%.

This week’s conversation with Brandin Cote started with discussion about the teams’ 45% power play in the weekend games against the Thunderbirds.
