Huskies look to fend off Cougars in Canada West hockey standings
One point separates the third place USask Huskies and the fourth place Regina Cougars in the east division of the Canada West women’s hockey standings. The schools meet in a home and home series which starts on Friday night, December 5th, at Merlis Belsher Place.
The Huskies are 6-6 and 2 following a pair of close losses to the number one ranked UBC Thunderbirds during the November 28-29 weekend in Vancouver. “We looked at it as a chance to see who we were”, said USask head coach Steve Kook. “I thought we came together as a crew. We played well as a group. We had a little more of a killer instinct. Now our challenge is to make sure we play that way every single weekend.”
Saskatchewan second year goaltender, Clara Juca, played well in a Saturday night 1-0 loss to the Thunderbirds. Offensively First year forward Peppi Virtanen has four goals while fourth year forward Jayde Cadieux has seven assists in 14 games so far this season. “There’s been a lot of growth, not just in our second- and third-year players but in our seniors too”, said Kook.
The 5-6-1-2 Regina Cougars will look to end a four-game losing after suffering a pair of one goal losses to the Manitoba Bisons on the November 28th-29th weekend. “Their defense is young, but they have some veteran forwards, and they have been getting good goaltending”, said Kook. Cougar fifth-year goaltender Natalie Williamson has 2.10 goals against average this season.
