Huskies look ahead to new year after blanking provincial rival

Dec 6, 2025 | 11:04 PM

The Huskies head into the 2026 calendar year with an 11-4 and 1 record following a 5-0 shutout victory over the Regina Cougars on Saturday night at Merlis Belsher Place. Fifth year goaltender Jordan Kooy turned aside 28 Regina shots for his 7th victory of the season. It marked the second straight night of strong goaltending for USask, as Bryan Thomson made 24 saves in a Friday night 6-1 win over the U of R.

Third year Huskie, Josh Pillar, opened the scoring in the first period on a breakaway. Referees Ty Skene and Bradyen Glynn were delayed in confirming it was a goal initially but eventually credited Pillar with his fourth of the season at the 14:04 mark of the opening frame.

Saskatchewan’s power play continues to be dangerous. Chase Bertholet buried his fourth of the season on the man advantage late in the second period to make it a 2-0 game. The Huskies, who led the conference in power play goals last season, are operating at 27% efficiency this season.

Two and a half minutes later, veteran forward Chantz Petruic continued his torrid goal scoring pace with his 16th of the season. Petruic is now tied with Terry Lloyd for 13th on the Huskies’ all-time goal scoring list with 59.

First year Huskie Conner Roulette is now all alone on top of the conference’s rookie scoring list. The Winnipeg product scored twice in the final frame and now has nine goals in 16 games.

Saskatchewan remains a point behind second place Mount Royal in the Canada West, east division standings with two games in hand on the MRU Cougars. Regina fell to 2 and 14 with the loss.

USask continues its season on the January 9th-10th weekend with a visit to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Bisons.
